Tour of Leaving the Smoke Behind: Enjoying an Awayday
Tuesday, April 1st, 2025, 5:30 pm
Poster House

119 W 23rd Street, New York, NY 10011

Join us at Poster House for a curator-led tour of Leaving the Smoke Behind: Enjoying an Awayday, showcasing the Golden Age of London Passenger Transport Board posters. Like NYC’s poster campaign “The Subway Sun,” these posters advertised attractions reachable by public transit, featuring images of pastoral or unspoiled destinations for weekend day trips at the outer reaches of the London Underground and its connecting networks of tram and bus lines. This visit complements the Transit Museum’s new exhibit, Shining a Light on The Subway Sun.

Space is limited. RSVP is required. RSVP here.

Virtual Experience: Old City Hall Station
Wednesday, April 23rd, 2025, 2 pm ET
Online

City Hall is the ‘Jewel in the Crown’ of stations in the system! Designed by renowned architects Heins & LaFarge, the station featured innovative vaulted tile ceilings by master artisan Rafael Guastavino. Its elegant chandeliers, leaded skylights, and graceful curves inspired awe among visitors.

In 1904, New York City’s very first subway ride left from the City Hall station amidst great civic pride. Join us online as we dive into the creation of the Interborough Rapid Transit Company, early subway construction, and the City Beautiful movement that led to that momentous day. We’ll look closely at the decorative flourishes of the decommissioned station with historic photographs from the Museum’s collection, maps, architectural drawings, and photos of the station today. RSVP here.

Virtual Program: Poetry at the End of the Line
Tuesday, April 29th, 2025, 6 pm ET
Online

Celebrate National Poetry Month with poets Sue Landers and KC Trommer as they explore how the subway fuels creative expression.

Sue Landers’ new poetry collection, What to Carry into the Future, was born from a quest to ride every New York City subway line end to end. KC Trommer’s QUEENSBOUND—a collaborative audio project by, for, and about Queens—has used the 7 Line as both stage and muse.

Enjoy poetry readings, a discussion of their writing processes, and the chance to co-create an “exquisite corpse” poem inspired by transit. RSVP here.
