Explore the rich history of New York City, past and present, one neighborhood at a time. Through the lens of transportation, discover new places, share stories, and connect with communities.

Join us on a walking tour of Gowanus and Carroll Gardens, unique and historic areas in northwest Brooklyn that have seen their share of transformation. In Gowanus, this former industrial zone continues to change as defunct factories are razed or repurposed, new high rises are built, and its canal is revitalized. Settled in the 19th century by immigrants, Carroll Gardens is now a lively residential neighborhood, with streets lined with brownstones and gardens. Transit has changed both neighborhoods over time, from ferries and street trollies to elevated tracks.

This tour will highlight several unique transit sites including the Smith-9th Street station, one of the highest subway stations in the world, the Carroll Street Bridge, the country’s oldest surviving “retractile” bridge, and the former Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company's central power station.

Members enjoy early access! Tickets go on sale to Museum members on Wednesday, January 15th at 10am ET. Remaining tickets go on sale to the public at Friday, January 17th at 10am ET.
