Building Transit Hubs: 34^th St-Herald Square and 42^nd St-Bryant Park

The stations at 34^th Street-Herald Square and 42^nd Street-Bryant Park were two of New York’s most complicated stations to construct because each had to be threaded above and below existing rail tunnels. Originally built as a part of the Independent (IND)’s Sixth Avenue Line that opened in 1940, both 34^th and 42^nd Street stations faced exceptional challenges as transportation hubs with multiple interconnecting lines, tunnels, and levels.

Transit expert Andrew Sparberg will lead a virtual visit of these stations and provide an in-depth examination of their uniquely complex construction histories.
